RSVP targets citizens over 55 and encourages them to stay active by volunteering their time to local agencies that are in dire need of assistance. RSVP is able to give seniors an opportunity to participate in fulfilling activities, which can make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteer activities help seniors improve self-confidence and self-esteem, which helps reduce blood pressure and improves immune function. In addition to helping seniors stay healthy and happy, RSVP also serves as a resource to the local non-profits, government agencies, and health care proprieters that are registered as stations. These stations, with assistance from our RSVP volunteers, meet critical community needs. RSVP also conducts several programs that meet unmet needs of the community with a focus on at-risk children and those facing personal crisis. These programs include: The RSVP Giving Store allows children who would otherwise be unable to purchase gifts for their family members the opportunity to select a gift free of charge for everyone who lives in their household. The Giving Store teaches these children "The Joy of Giving". Nearly 500 children attended the 2009 Giving Store and selected and wrapped over 2,700 gifts for their household members. The Giving Store is run solely by volunteer power and fundraising efforts. More than 150 volunteers help at the store. In addition, numerous local businesses and individuals contributed funds to help purchase gifts, wrapping, and other materials for the store. The Flagler County Blanketeers provides handmade items to people facing crisis. This group of volunteers spends more than 20,000 hours per year knitting and crocheting items to distribute to agencies that assist people going through various hardships. They make baby blankets, lap robes, shawls, baby outfits, helmet liners, hats, and other miscellaneous items. The items are then given to people wherever the need may be, locally, statewide, nationwide, and even internationally. Items are given to people going through Chemo, Dialysis, unplanned pregnancies, teen moms, tornado victims, soldiers serving in Iraq, Tsunami victims, Hurricane victims, Domestic Abuse victims, migrant workers, and many more. The “I Can Read”, RSVP reading/tutoring program, matches volunteers with students K-3 in the Flagler County Schools. The volunteer will be working one on one with the students to help them develop their reading skills and self-confidence in reading out loud. Each volunteer will meet one hour a week through the school year with a student in their classroom to help them with reading by having the student read out loud to them. Volunteers will help the students with fluency, pronunciation, comprehension and comfort in reading. Students will be encouraged to read to family members when they are at home. – Over the school year, periodic reviews and surveys will be done to track effectiveness of the progress of the volunteer/student relationship. – Volunteers will receive four training sessions through the year in related areas. – Primary volunteers are RSVP, 55 and over, but the program is open to all volunteers. Lastly, RSVP volunteers also participate in the FVS S.W.A.T. Team (Support Workers Available Today) program that provides volunteer assistance for special events throughout the county. Many of these events could not be conducted without the support of our volunteers. Events that they have provided support to include: Flagler County Chamber of Commerce's Creekside Festival, Florida Ag Museum's Barn Dances, Alzheimer Association's Memory Walk, American Cancer Society's Relay For Life, Adult & Community Education's Home Show, Washington Oak's Herbs in the Gardens, Earth Day and Holiday in the Gardens events, Habitat for Humanity builds, Humane Society's Walk for the Animals, Flagler County Library's Tree Lighting Ceremony, Palm Harbor Tree Lighting Ceremony, Palm Harbor Easter Egg Hunt, Book Fairs and Holiday Stores at the local schools, Rummage Sales and other fundraisers and many more. Many of these events not only bring the community together but also raise funds for various causes. In 2009 alone, RSVP volunteers provided assistance to events that raised over $200,000 to help cancer patients, Alzheimer's patients, disadvantaged children, abused and neglected animals and provided support to other causes. |
